Quality Control and Functional Integrity Inspection
Technical Protocols for Sharpness and Alignment Verification
A Reusable Surgical Instrument that is sterile but non-functional is a surgical risk. Quality control in the SPD involves critical physical testing of each device.
Hemostats and Clamps are tested for "Ratchet Integrity"—ensuring they stay locked when clicked but release smoothly. Needle Holders are tested by clamping a suture needle; if the needle can be rotated by hand while clamped, the tungsten carbide inserts are worn and must be replaced.
Scissors are tested using specific materials (e.g., latex sheets or tissue paper) to ensure they cut cleanly at the tip without "snagging" or "pinching." This document outlines the use of 3D Stereo Microscopes to detect microscopic pitting, cracks in box locks, and "fretting" around pivot pins, all of which are early indicators of mechanical failure or potential bacterial reservoirs.
